2. Installing the information center
-----------------------------------------------------------------------

If autorun is set on your operating system, the installation program
starts when you insert the CD in the CD-ROM drive. If you do not
have autorun set, you must run the appropriate install program on the CD:

--------------
2.1 Windows* 2000, Me, XP, NT 4.0 or i5/OS

win32/install_win.exe

--------------
2.2 SuSE or Red Hat on Intel* processor

linux_i386/install_lnx_i386.bin

--------------
2.3 SuSE or Red Hat on POWER5* processor

linux_ppc/install_lnx_ppc.bin

--------------
2.4 AIX

aix/install_aix.bin

The install wizard gives you some options on the type of installation
that you want to do.

-----------------------------------------------------------------------
3. Uninstalling the information center
-----------------------------------------------------------------------

To uninstall the information center, use the Add/Remove Programs
icon on the Control Panel.

-----------------------------------------------------------------------
4. Viewing the information center
-----------------------------------------------------------------------

In all cases described below, the Information Center is viewed in a web
browser.

---------------------
4.1 Windows and AIX

For Windows, double click the icon on the desktop. The Information Center
is opened in the default web browser.

For AIX, double click the icon in the Application Manager window. The
Information Center is opened in the Mozilla web browser. To view the
Information Center in a browser other than Mozilla, open the desired
browser to this url:

http://localhost:4411/infocenter/v1r2/HWen_US/index.htm

---------------------
4.2 SuSE and RedHat

To view the Information Center that is installed on a Linux server from
the Linux server, open a web browser to this url:

http://localhost:4411/infocenter/v1r2/HWen_US/index.htm

To view the Information Center that is installed on a Linux server from
a Linux client, open a web browser to this url:

http://Linux_server:4411/infocenter/v1r2/HWen_US/index.htm

Note: The Linux_server name needs to be qualified if it is not in the
same domain as the Linux client. For example, you may need to specify
something like this:

http://Linux_server.mycompany.com:4411/infocenter/v1r2/HWen_US/index.htm

where mycompany.com is the domain in which the server resides.

-----------------------------------------------------------------------
5. National Language Support
-----------------------------------------------------------------------
+ Some of the language versions are not fully translated and appear
partially in English.

+ If multiple languages are installed, you must uninstall each
language separately before all the files can be removed.

-----------------------------------------------------------------------
6. Known issues
-----------------------------------------------------------------------

6.1. Installing more than one information center

You might experience problems if you install the iSeries Information
Center after you have installed the eServer Hardware Information
Center.

Solution:
Insert the eServer Hardware Information Center CD into the CD-ROM
drive, and reinstall the eServer Hardware Information Center.

---------
6.2. Windows Desktop shortcut does not work

You might be unable to start the information center by using your
desktop shortcut.

Solution:
Change the target of the desktop information center shortcut.

The default target for the shortcut is:
    localhost:4411
Replace "localhost" with the hostname of your computer.

To find the hostname of your computer, start a command line
interface (or shell) and run the following command:
    ping localhost

---------
6.3. 'Page cannot be displayed' or 'File not found' or 'The connection
was refused when attempting to contact localhost:4411' error

If you get one of these errors when you try to access the Information
Center, you may have to manually start the Information Center server (see
the instructions below for your platform).

---------
6.3.1 Windows

For Windows, you can start the Information Center server by running the
batch file:

<Information_Center_Home>\tomcat\ic_startup.bat

Where <Information_Center_Home> is the directory you chose during the
install. The default is 'C:\Program Files\IBM\Information'.

Similarly, you can shut down the Information Center server by running
the batch file:

<Information_Center_Home>\tomcat\ic_shutdown.bat

--------
6.3.2 AIX, SuSE and RedHat

On these platforms, you can start the Information Center by running the
shell command:

/bin/sh <Information_Center_Home>/tomcat/ic_startup.sh

Where <Information_Center_Home> is the directory you chose during install.
The default is '/opt/IBM/Information'.

To shut down the Information Center server, run this command:

/bin/sh <Information_Center_Home>/tomcat/ic_shutdown.sh

--------
6.4. Problems with different Java Runtime Environments

Several releases of the Sun Java Runtime Environment (JRE) contain
bugs that seriously affect the performance of the Information Center.

For this reason, support is not offered for any information centers
that are running under one of the following releases of the JRE. The
specified releases of the JRE contain bugs that affect the
information center:

+ 1.4.2_04: Locks up Internet Explorer on several operations
    + 1.4.2_01, 1.4.2_02, 1.4.2_03, 1.4.2_04: Locks up Netscape
        browsers on several operations
    + 1.3.1_07, 1.3.1_08, 1.3.1_09, 1.4.0, 1.4.0_01, 1.4.0_02,
1.4.0_03, 1.4.0_04: Does not display the navigation bar
+ Microsoft JVM: Corrupts the navigation bar in several National
Language versions of the information center

Solution:
You can always find a supported version of the JRE at the following
URL:
    http://publib.boulder.ibm.com/iseries/jre/javaplugin.exe
